Player Ratings: vs Collingwood Round 3, 2017

Last time they played at the SCG, it was a thumping win for the Swans. But this time, a shocking first quarter was a bridge too far for the Swans, falling short by a solitary point.

Lineup

B: Nick Smith, Aliir Aliir, Nic Newman
HB: Callum Mills, Heath Grundy, Harry Marsh
C:
Zak Jones, Josh P. Kennedy, Jake Lloyd
HF: Oliver Florent, Lance Franklin, Luke Parker
F: George Hewett, Sam Reid, Will Hayward
FOL: Sam Naismith, Dan Hannebery, Kieren Jack
I/C: Jordan Dawson, Jordan Foote, Robbie Fox, Callum Sinclair

40: Nick Smith
4.5
Had a dirty, torrid time in the first half. Lifted in the 2nd, but was still soundly beaten
for the night. 1st half, 2/10, 2nd half, 6.5/10.
36: Aliir Aliir
8
Shaky first quarter, recovered with aplomb. Steadied the defence early in the 2nd quarter and
lead from the back with trademark intercept marks and dash. Was vital and lifted the team on
his shoulders at times. Was immense in the 2nd half with a ridiculous 10 minute spell, repelling
everything the Pies threw at him.
28: Nic Newman
7.5
Finished with 23 disposals, 1 goal, 10 contested, 4 rebound 50s, 4 tackles and 2 inside 50s.
A damn fine effort in his 2nd game.
14: Callum Mills
6.5
Had his colours lowered in the first half and was uncharacteristically poor with the ball.
Lifted in the 2nd half and did ok overall.
39: Heath Grundy
5.5
Had a forgettable first half, dominated by Moore and toweled up by White. Didn’t have an
opponent to body up to, lack of pace exposed.
31: Harry Marsh
6
He ran the ball well from defence and stepped up alongside Aliir in the 2nd quarter. But his
disposal let him down time and time again. He’s a better option than Laidler, but not a
better kick.
10: Zak Jones
7
Had another one of those ‘almost’ games. Did a lot right, but conceded a costly free kick
that turned into a critical goal for the Pies. Was shifted to Moore, giving away plenty of
height, and shut him out of the game.
12: Josh Kennedy
8.5
A quiet first quarter turned into a monster first half with 17, finished with 33, 23
contested, 7 clearances, 3 inside 50s and a goal. His best quarter was the last quarter,
but he turned the tide with Hannebery in the 2nd.
44: Jake Lloyd
7.5
He’s racking and packing, but his poor disposal under pressure continues to let him down.
He finished with 33, 23 uncontested and 1 inside 50, but 10 rebound 50s, and a few of those
were just bombs.
13: Oliver Florent
6.5
Found it hard going, should have had a free kick right in front in the 3rd. Worked hard,
5 inside 50s, 1 goal and 3 tackles was a decent shift.
23: Lance Franklin
6.5
Several bright moments littered an otherwise down performance. In typical Franklin fashion,
threatened to blow the game wide open, but treated the ball like it was soap. He still
finished with 18 disposals, 7 marks and 8 inside 50s, but more importantly, just 3 behinds
26: Luke Parker
6.5
He doesn’t look fit, and he’s playing like he’s not. 12 clearances, but shocking DE% just
breaking even didn’t really give the Swans much. Finished with 22, 18 contested and 4 tackles
29: George Hewett
6
Had a big 2nd quarter, but little else throughout the game. Still had 4 clearances and 6
tackles, and even though he had a few bright moments, he faded far too easily from the game
4: Dan Hannebery
8.5
Best on ground, should rack up the 3 brownlow votes. He was panicky and rushed in the 1st,
fixed that, and was ridiculously good for the rest of the game. Finished with 31, 14
contested, 4 marks, 6 clearances, 4 rebound 50s, 9 tackles, 5 inside 50s and a goal.
20: Sam Reid
5
Could not work his way into the game. Didn’t have a disposal in the 1st quarter (1 tackle).
Finished with a goal, from a dropped mark free kick.
9: Will Hayward
7
Kicked 3 goals from 8 disposals. Great performance from the 2nd gamer and it’ll do him a
world of good. We’ve tried Towers, Jack and Rose, but I think this one is a keeper.
35: Sam Naismith
7.5
When the Swans were getting smashed in the ruck, and he was responsible for this, he lifted,
dominating Grundy in the contests. He finished with 10 disposals, 4 marks, 31 hit outs, at
least half to advantage, and 2 tackles. He gave the Swans first use.
15: Kieren Jack
5.5
2 goals in the 2nd quarter, a shimmy on the wing in the last, basically invisible for the
rest of the game. Hit a chiseler pass in the 2nd half for a goal, which was good.
34: Jordan Dawson
6
One of the hardest games to debut in, ever. Collingwood weren’t far off the tackle record
the Swans set a few years back. Still, showed composure at times and clean disposal. His
last quarter was pretty good too.
6: Jordan Foote
5
He’s a better option than Cunningham, but barely. He gets in, tackles and doesn’t mind
winning his own ball, but his disposal lets him down. 3 clangers from 13 disposals, barely
over 60% DE. DE doesn’t even account for shanks or hospital handballs.
42: Robbie Fox
6.5
Another impressive game from the not so ‘young’ 2nd gamer. Got his first AFL goal, 15
disposals, 10 contested and 7 tackles.
18: Callum Sinclair
3.5
Start of the game, experience over youth, sure. 10 minutes in, a cannon into the sun would
have been humane. He was terrible in the 1st half, possibly the worst player. He had 3
disposals with 0 DE%. How is that even possible? He was hardly better in the 2nd half.
Cameron would have definitely been the better pick, but one has to wonder when too much
youth is too much. 8 disposals, 3 clangers, 33.3% DE. Sigh.
